From Our Cohorts: The Royale Day 5

Day 5, August 17th 2019

The cast are now rehearsing on their feet. They are, as it were, finding out where they stand in the play and where they stand on the stage.

The focus of the first morning session was Scene 1, the fight between Fish and Jay.

The director emphasized precise positioning of the actors in the scene and the boxing action itself, e.g. how the actors should simulate clinches (since in the play, the boxers never actually make direct contact with each other), etc.

Before the actual rehearsal started the actors warmed up in various ways in the rehearsal room. One did press-ups, another did stretching exercises, two of them silently rehearsed their lines—one walking around, another sitting down— and another walked around trying to break in his costume shoes. If one didn’t know that this was the prelude to a theater company’s rehearsal session, one might be forgiven for thinking that one was watching a group of inmates in an institution. No offence, guys, maybe that’s a play of its own!
